just stopping by, not much to say. i wanted to see you. but i guess not today being at fancy events without anyone do drink and laugh with was - awkward for her. she'd assumed, of course, that she'd have to stay sober the whole night, but being sober while her brother paraded his perfect girlfriend around was enough to make a person sick,, especially when her mother had asked, more than once, when the pair planned to be married, despite the fact that they weren't even engaged yet. then about halfway through the first speech, her mother had turned on maddox and asked him why he hadn't brought a date and things got even more awkward. especially when he'd turned on her and brought up the fact that she didn't have anybody with her either. the night had proceeded from that point to get worse as people droned and droned. by the time the appetizers had begun to circulate around the room, she thought she was going to die from all the family - bonding she was doing. but that was before she saw her mother interacting near the back of the room with one of the healers who'd probably come down on their break or right after work to see what was going on and hadn't bothered to change yet. it was even worse when she grabbed him by the arm and dragged him toward their table, where she'd been sitting, sneaking sips from the flask she had strapped under her dress. "marlene, look who i found." she'd said brightly. "it's ashton hunter. from next door. or well, used to be next door." marley looked up with a smile on her face. "Yeah mom. I work here. I know who he is." Her mom looked disappointed in her tone so she sighed, "Hi Ashton. It's so nice to see you here."

[googlefont="Amatic SC:400"] awkward encounter Ashton wasn't really wanting to be here, it wasn't as if he really was obligated, he could skip out and go home and sleep for the rest of eternity, or stay up and read, wait to see if someone came along to talk to him and complain about the awful night with her family. That was going to be his option, he had brought clothes in case someone made him go, be a face even if most of the large money holders were pureblood elite and they didn't want to see a muggleborn. But he was going to take a look, see how his best friend was fairing and then - rush off to go home unless she told him to stay. Though it wasn't Marlene who had found him, but her mother, whom had insisted on dragging him along to their family table with her brothers. He shifted awkwardly, he wished he could - disappear.
"Hello Mckinnons, good to see you all." he spoke in earnest, he was glad to have at least some friendly faces and he wasn't really prepared to be much more than just saying hi. "Do you mind if I borrow Marlene for a few moments, work stuff and all." she looked like she needed some saving for at least a few moments and he could give her that break from her family. He didn't even have anything to say, he was just trying his best to - save her or at the very least try, she didn't seem like she was enjoying herself. "I promise it'll only be for a few moments, and then I need to get dressed and join this lovely party." her family particularly made him nervous, like they knew about him and hers relationship over the last years, ones that were less than appropriate.

just stopping by, not much to say. i wanted to see you. but i guess not today oh thank god. he was saving her. "Of course. work stuff. He needs me for work stuff." she stood quickly, grabbing her bag. Her mother wouldn't have time to object. But then he said she was only going to be needed for a few. Really? He had to just throw her back to the dogs like that? And he'd told them he was changing instead of just - letting it happen. Maybe they wouldn't have realized that he'd gone from wearing his bright green robes to - his nice ones if he hadn't said anything about it. But they'd know now. That made her - helping him with the process all the more awkward. She was going to do it anyways though. "And he's going to need help changing. He's dreadful at tying ties. And putting shirts on right side out." she smiled at him, before realizing she wasn't supposed to know about his issues with getting dressed. Her mother was looking at her like she'd shot someone. "Because when he comes - into work - he often has his-" she was so bad at this. "Because we're sleeping togeher and sometimes after I take his clothes off, he has problems putting them back on." she turned and looped her arm through his, "Cummon Ashton. Before she kills us both." She said steering him away from the blast zone she was sure they were leaving. She thought she might've even heard her mother faint.

[googlefont="Amatic SC:400"] awkward encounter He was courteous enough to save her and then she slowly declined a simple - hey giving you some time away from your family and you can hide in the change room while he changed and they could return together and he would be the wall between her and her family like he tended to be for all these years and then - his silly friend had to blow their cover and he was perfectly fine with neither her mother or brothers knowing about their more than platonic relationships. In fact he was perfectly fine with them thinking he had never even observed Marlene as the kind of girl he would have wanted to date or enjoy, or love or anything because there was something frightening about brothers. Ashton wasn't that kind of brother, his sister married and was probably going to have children and then there was him who hadn't really put up too much of a disgruntled fight when it came to his sister and her eventual husbands relationships. He doubt it worked that way when it was - not Ashton who was playing the roles.
He looked on horrified when she opened her mouth, they could have passed with the tie story because she would have seen his clumsy tie tying at Hogwarts which was a fairly accurate representation. Even the shirt thing maybe too, it wasn't as if they knew how his dressing capabilities were and now they were looking at him with that look and he felt the need to not return to this party. "I - well, please dont..." he looked startled at Lena as she tugged him along away from her family. "Okay sounds good - it's, lovely to see you all." he added nervously looking over his shoulder before quickly leaving the room. His breathing had certainly altered. "What'd you have to say that for?" he blurted out between breaths.

just stopping by, not much to say. i wanted to see you. but i guess not today she'd said worse things to her mother. it wasn't really a secret in their household that she wasn't- a chaste individual. For the most part she kept to herself. Her mother had given up on trying to learn all of her boyfriends' names at this point, because the cast rotated so frequently. But it wasn't rotating any longer. It was at a stand still, not for lack of trying. She'd been trying for a while there just wasn't anyone in the world ot be found. So she had Ashton who was - taking care of her as he always had. His company was so much more appreciated these days, though. When she would normally be alone and could turn to him instead of her empty apartment. She probably - shoudldn't have mentioned that though. But it was sort of too late now. "Well it's not like it isn't true. She's just so - nosy. She would've found out some way anyways. Telling her makes things easier." She didn't know why it was any easier now, because truly nothing had changed, but it was. Some how. She felt a lot better now that her mom didn't think she was a social pariah. "She's probably going to want you to join us too. When you're done with the changing thing. And we go back in there. There's seats at the table, since Maddox and I are incompetent. She'll want to sit next to you though. And probably put Maddox on the other side because he's the most likely to hit you." She gave him a light smile. "Sorry?"[/quote]

[googlefont="Amatic SC:400"] awkward encounter Sure he realized that her telling her mother hey we're sleeping together wasn't all that bad, but he would have preferred a 'hey we're dating' to come out of her lips, to confirm what he wanted to be true. But that was the stigma of being the best friends there was like some limitless vastness of unacceptable forms of dating when it came to that grey area. He personally wanted to as if it was just some kind of line drawn in the sand that the one who wasn't madly in love with the other could see. Ashton didn't want to be the best friend forever, he liked the idea of being more and he liked how their relationship had been stemming towards that area, the she was pretty much living with him, and slept in his bed and not always was it about sex, and he fed her.
He eyed her skeptically as she replied that it was easier this way, he wanted to argue for whom, as he was the one who would be on the receiving end of glares and he didn't need anyone else to think of him was the scourge of the earth. "My dearest Lena. When your best friend gives you a slight nudge to get you out of the wolf's den, you do not shove him back into it to be the distraction while you run." not that she was running she'd be there, hopefully. "You know I can leave, the last thing they need is a muggleborn parading around in front of all the galleon elitists with their poofy quaff hair and blood purity standards" but he would stay for her, because there was a standard between friends. "But you have to make sure he doesn't hit me, I bruise easily."

just stopping by, not much to say. i wanted to see you. but i guess not today "I hate to break it to you buddy, but I'm one of those poofy haired, purebloods tonight." she said, pushing him toward the bathroom so they could get him properly attired. "And you won't mind that tonight when we're at you house, when you're flattening this poofy hair as we roll around in bed." she opened the door and waved him inside. "But if you really must go home, I won't stop you. I just thought you'd want to help me get through this night." she sighed and began pulling her skirt up. "Because god knows this isn't helping at all. she held her leg out and pulled the flask out, before dropping her dress back down. "Sorry. That's probably not appropriate, is it?" She rolled her eyes. "Can't have the flouncy pureblood girl showing you anything that's going on under her dress that probably cost more than you make in a week." She stepped back from the door and allowed it to close. "On second thought, I think that you should probably get dressed on your own, because the Pureblood girl probably doesn't want to get her hands dirty from helping a muggleborn. Because my family and I - we're just no good Pureblood scum who don't care about people at all. That's not why we paid so much money to be at this charity event." she was clearly upset. "We're only here to rub elbows with other people of our stature." She sounded ridiculous, but he was the one that had been accusatory.

[googlefont="Amatic SC:400"] awkward encounter This argument. She'd have realized now he knew she wasn't the same kind of terrible individuals that he had encountered in school and that she had been his neighbor for all of his life, her family in fact had been his neighbors for all of his life so the idea that they disliked muggles was sort of - comedic. "Last I checked you weren't a fluffy headed blood purity elitist, who had spent most of our time together staring down at me with the look of reproach on your face. Or we'd not have survived our childhood and Hogwarts, or now being friends." the idea that she could ever be someone - that her family could be those that he despised was sort of ridiculous. "Honestly it's kind of horrific after all these years that you would think I ever thought anything of the sort about you or your family after all these years." they were certainly like his second family. He sat down and began to untie his shoes that he wore daily at work to trade for the pair of dress shoes he had polished the night before that'd be put on last. Ashton looked up at her steadily wondering what was wrong. "Is something wrong? You know I'm not nearly as jaded about purebloods right? I know there is good and bad and all those grey areas and I'm just feeling like - this is sort of unexpected, so I obviously go down the something's wrong route." he sat up looking at her. Had something gone amiss?

just stopping by, not much to say. i wanted to see you. but i guess not today "You siad you were leaving-" she said slowly, as he began to put his shoes on. IF he was leaving, he certainly wouldn't need those. "I'm not the one who said you were leaving. That you were running away from everyone in there. Seriously, nobody is even going to know." She'd just announced to basically everyone near their table that they were sleeping together anyways, she didn't know why it was going back in there was going to be embarassing for any reason besides that one. "If it's that big of a deal, we can just mess your hair up, mess mine up, tear my dress in a couple of places, and they'll talk too much about the sex we had while we were out here to even bother caring about your blood status." It didn't matter, really. She didn't midn people talking about her, they did it all the time. "I just wanted to have a nice time today." she said, leaning against the wall. "Put on the dress. Do the hair. Come here and have a nice dinner. I normally have a date and the night is so much eaiser, but I don't, so I'm in a mood. But then you showed up, so things were going to be okay, because you're, you know, the next best thing. And then you want to leave too?" What was the point anymore? "And I just - Do you need help with anything?"

[googlefont="Amatic SC:400"] awkward encounter He eyed her from his seat, as she began to try and make it better by announcing no one would know he was muggleborn, they would just instead remember that his best friend had just embarrassed him immensely in front of her family and other witches and wizards that were supposed to believe in his abilities as a healer and not as a sex crazed machine, that he would now be sitting with awkwardly as they stared at him. "That was hardly a validated threat Lena, you know as well as I do that I'm not going to leave you here alone to fend off your family by yourself." that's not the sort of thing that people did when you were in love with them or when you really just hated to think that you abandoned someone. "You just told me your dress costs more than my salary, it's a perfectly attractive dress, it would be a crime against - something if harm came to it. Or to sound more or less masculine I haven't decided, messing up my hair is a tragedy it took me so long to do it." he frowned, social events weren't his thing, he avoided Quidditch matches and tried to avoid large social groups of more than ten, he hated the Ministry of Magic and walking inside it at all, for a minute he'd like to think and hope people would think that he belonged. He hid the frown behind layers of training to not to emote feelings across your face, but it hurt to be known as 'next best thing' to her. "No. I've got it covered." He pulled his robes off and took off the under shirt pulling it over his head, he had long since gotten over embarrassment about being shirtless around her. "Actually, I'll probably need help with the tie though." he gave a tiny smile over his shoulder trying to make himself feel better.
