Narcissa was the princess of the family: the little blond with the big blue eyes that would start to water at the slightest offense. Mommy and Daddy learned very quickly to respond to that and, doting parents that they were, flew to her side each and every time. Some of her favorite childhood memories are of herself and her mother and father, during the fall and spring months when both her sisters were away at Hogwarts. She felt like an only child then, pampered and beloved above all others. Narcissa had them wrapped around her finger even as a toddler.
But it has never been about the power for her, not like it is for Bellatrix. Narcissa simply likes being adored. Even as an adult, she craves the attention - not from her parents anymore, but from her peers. And she is, without a doubt, very good at getting it.
Narcissa was (predictably) sorted into Slytherin house at the tender age of eleven. It was a family tradition really, and besides that she fit in quite well. Her fellow purebloods were quick to take her under their wing, pretty little china doll that she was. Of course Bellatrix was there as well, and they remained close throughout their Hogwarts careers. But Andromeda had changed, and not for the better in the eyes of the other Blacks. The family eventually ended up disowning her, and Narcissa went along with it more than willingly.
For a while Narcissa was of the mindset that she only had one sister to worry about. As she matured, however, she realized that the paths she and Bellatrix were on were more different than she even realized. Narcissa wasn't the zealously ambitious, insidiously cunning person that her sister was. She was much more subtle in her ways - judgmental, calculating, the type who would wear a smile for you and turn right around and whisper behind your back. She was vain, arrogant, prideful, vengeful. Her coldness is not a biting winter storm like Bellatrix's; Narcissa's is a predatory frost that creeps up and up.
Even so, Narcissa had suitors aplenty during her later years at Hogwarts, all from likewise blue-blooded houses of nobility. But there was only one for her: Lucius Malfoy. Arranged marriages were not uncommon among pureblood families, particularly ones as well-known and renowned as the Blacks. Narcissa and Lucius were the talk of the entire Slytherin house for quite some time. The two of them did seem made for each other - not to mention the fact that they looked alike, a fact that in and of itself speaks volumes about both their characters.
It is of some importance to note Narcissa's prominent magical talents which she discovered and perfected while still in school. She is a skilled duelest, much in the way of her older sister Bellatrix. Her spellwork is neat and proper, her form just as much so. But the youngest Black daughter displayed other strengths as well - Apparition and Occlumency. She seemed to master these two skills to a far greater degree than others of her year, and they are practical applications for her day to day life.
Nowadays Narcissa is very much the same person that she was at Hogwarts, despite having graduated more than five years ago. No ounce of her vanity has diminished, and has in fact only been heightened along with her womanly beauty. She fancies herself a queen now rather than the princess she once was, and damned if Lucius doesn't treat her like one. She doesn't have a job because she doesn't need one - between her family and the Malfoys, there is enough money to sustain them indefinitely. The life of a socialite is the one for her - on the sidelines, not amidst the action. Think of her as a cheerleader for the Death Eaters.
If one good thing can be said about Narcissa, it is her capacity for love. As misguided and twisted as her views are, she is deathly loyal to those she considers family. The Blacks of course placed a huge emphasis on the importance of the family unit and heritage, and it is something Narcissa deeply believes in and desires.

Narcissa was born into a life of luxury. With her only concern being the taunts and torments of her two older sisters, she really had a model upbringing - by a blood purist's standards, of course, seeing as the Black daughters were raised to be highly prejudiced against Muggles and Muggleborns, a mindset that stuck with two out of the three.Narcissa was the princess of the family: the little blond with the big blue eyes that would start to water at the slightest offense.
