SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME Sylvia didn't often find herself in St. Mungo's - the thought of spending her days around the sick and dying was too depressing. She'd never been in here out of necessity either, thank goodness (though she was just lucky that Hogwarts had had a capable nurse on the premises, or she might have.) The cozy little hospital wing at Hogwarts was a far cry from these stark corridors and foreboding rooms.
She was just out of her element here though. It wasn't as if Sylvia had never been to visit her brother at work before - she simply couldn't remember the last time she'd done it. She hoped he would appreciate the surprise. He wasn't the type of person who took kindly to being blindsided, and lord knew Ashton didn't need to be any more paranoid than he already was. But she was his sister, his darling baby sister! That had to count for something.
Ever since she'd gotten married, Sylvia knew that some minuscule aspect of her relationship with her brother had changed. After she moved out they kept in touch, of course, but Ashton had never liked her husband - or hadn't liked the idea of him, anyway. She put it down to the fact that he was an overprotective brother, and it never phased her. She hoped it still didn't bother him, though. She was happy, and that should have been enough.
What Sylvia wondered now was whether he was happy - and if not she hoped to change that, even just a little bit.
After a few navigational inquiries and much sign-following, Sylvia reached her destination: the Spell Damage ward. This was Ashton's forte. She could picture him now, bustling to and fro, collecting data on this person, administering that person's medication. It was an excellent job for him, really. Something to keep him busy, and hopefully out of his own head. She looked around, keeping an eager eye out for her older brother. template by Margie @ Adoxography 2.0

Ashton liked working here, even with his normally upbeat and positive attitude, around people who injured themselves, or someone injured them. It was just really part of his day to day. He'd read charts before he walked in with a smile, or with some kind of neutral serious face, and try and make whomever it was injured to stay calm, that everything would be okay. Maybe it wasn't, but he wasn't going to let anything detour him from trying or believing as much. Ashton had just finished with a very sad woman who had her hand injured by a rogue spell while at the Ministry, he didn't ask what because half of the time he didn't want to know, and a lot of the time Ashton was better off not asking because the answer wasn't something that could be willingly given to him anyways. Now it was just a matter of time to wait before they would proceed, which meant that he could - eat or sit for five seconds before someone realized they needed him for something and would ask for help.
He was considering going up to see Lena, it wasn't like he hadn't seen her not a few hours before, but it was part of the routine. The one where he would get bored or have some time free, and instead of using it to sleep because he worked awful hours, he would go see her, pester her as he leaned over the counter as she talked about so and so did something for her in some kind of big romantic gesture as she - didn't even realize that he was male, and was in love with her, but it was hard to voice it, something he wouldn't do. Which spurred enough jealousy from himself, but he'd always be there to help her pick up the pieces afterward.
Ashton read the chart again, about to place it back at the main station when he saw his sister lurking, Ashton settled the chart down slowly handing it off to his healer in training, as he walked across the floor to give Sylvia a hug. "Well look what the Manticore dragged in. My favorite sister." as if he had any others. Yet his happiness about his sister changed for a moment. "You're not here because you're injured are you?" he inspected her quickly stepping back to make sure all limbs were intact.

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME Ashton found her first. He moved in for a hug and Sylvia's face lit up, a girlish squeak of happiness slipping out to disrupt the professionalism of the place. She quickly covered her mouth in a weak attempt to stifle it, but the excitement of seeing her brother still shone in her eyes. Suddenly she just wanted to spend time with him, the whole day even. She should have gone to his flat and visited - what was she thinking, in the middle of a work day? He was much too busy to stick around for long, surely.
She rolled her eyes at his question. "No - I just thought I'd stop by and say hi." Now it was her turn to inspect him. He looked the same as always, perhaps a bit rumpled from long hours at work, but that was just Ashton. "You probably don't have a lot of time right now and I should have waited to see you but I just... I feel like it's been a while. Everything's fine, really. Great, even," she added hastily, because the worried look remained in his eyes. Sylvia actually wasn't sure when the last time they'd spoken in person was. Maybe it wasn't all that long ago and she was just being needy... hopefully he wouldn't mind. No, of course he wouldn't. template by Margie @ Adoxography 2.0

Maybe he was a bit too quick to judge on the matter of his sister could be injured, but it was really hard for him not to think so. Anyone in the wards were injured and there was always someone new coming in and that meant that he needed to do his best to treat them. The most that he could hope, was that no one he knew closely would ever find themselves there. Because his ward wasn't for those that had just a mishap with their wand, these were serious injuries. Even if he was mass paranoia about his sister, he was relieved when she confirmed that she wasn't there because she had suffered some terrible injury, though that was silly because she was walking and looked as perky as ever.
"Well I'm glad that you're just here to say hi and not needing my medical technique." he knew he couldn't spend forever with her, but they would have to use their time together as best as they could. "I can spend some time together, we can go and get something to eat? That'll buy us some time to catch up. They can't tell me I'm not allowed to eat." consider his diet while working dealt with cold food, of something that was in a handheld bag that he could pick at for hours, that was full of starch and salt. He could use real food.

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME She could tell that he was being honest. He wanted to spend time with her, and Sylvia was immediately reassured - all traces of previous doubts vanished, and they could be brother and sister again. Even if they didn't have the time like they used to, this was something they could both hold on to and enjoy.
"You know, you should be thanking me," she said, poking a finger into his chest. "You've got an excuse for a break now. And I don't mind being your meal ticket for the day, just tell me where." She felt alarmingly maternal all of a sudden, and it startled her. It was not a feeling she wanted to experience, not for a long while anyway. Sylvia Bones, of all people, was certainly not cut out to be a mother. But it didn't mean she couldn't baby her brother a bit, even if he was older. She found that she was worrying about him, though not nearly to the degree that he worried about her, or about anything for that matter. Perhaps he had rubbed off on her after all. It was nice to have her around, not to have to worry about a patient or someone who needed him, he had his sister. That was enough. For a few moments he could just drown out his work brain and then go through the process of spending with his sister, someone who he didn't get to see as much as he wanted to, but was glad to see whenever the rare opportunity came up. She was married now, which pinned a small rift between them, as he worked and she was married and worked, so their time together was so minimal and casual.
"I always just kind of pretend to fall asleep over the counter before they just tell me to go eat." he ate almost three meals there, working twenty hour shifts, sometimes less meals because he didn't have the time. Ashton wrapped a arm around his sister's shoulder. "So I thank you, you saved me the effort to remind them I need to eat and a break, even better to all of that I get to do so with you. Now the cafeteria food is probably miserable, but leaving is not really - allowed, healers in training always have these crazy moments where their heads feel like they chopped off, and they scramble to find anyone who is competent enough to save them." which was him, because they didn't fear him because Ashton wasn't scary. "So how's the husband. And you - how are you doing?" he asked.

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME Sylvia had always felt a deep connection with her older brother. They were undeniable different (and that was an understatement) but the way he talked with her, the easy manner in which he let his feelings show even in the smallest ways - that was something they shared. She wondered if he talked this way with other people. Ashton was a very guarded person, Sylvia knew, so it was something of a privilege to interact like this. It was special.
She smiled and shook her head in a mildly exasperated sort of way, absorbing his stream of consciousness as it came at her. "You're overworked, Ash," she said kindly. "But... I suppose if it makes you happy, it's good." She met his gaze as he asked his question, a barely perceptible spark of defiance in her eyes. Sylvia knew Ashton wasn't particularly fond of her husband... but he was asking about him. Probably only for her sake.
"Fine. He's fine, we're fine." She responded, deciding to drop the matter before it turned into something nasty, which she was sure it had the potential to do. "I'm just trying to keep busy, you know - not as much as you of course, but... oh, you know how I get when I'm bored." She smirked a bit, the fire in her eyes replaced by a mischievous gleam. There was a bit of a pause before she asked her own question, and this time it was almost with trepidation.
"And you? How is my studly brother getting on with the pretty Healer ladies?" Another pause, a lower tone, and now a definite note of incrimination. "Please don't tell me you've still got her bumming around..." She didn't mean it in a spiteful way - well, maybe a bit - but Sylvia still almost wished she could take it back. She didn't want any hard feelings after this visit. It was supposed to be pleasant, after all.

This was something that was rare, and he wasn't about to try and push her away because it seemed silly, they had spent their entire lives growing up together so it was only natural that he would want to see how she was doing. It was part o the protective pact that he had placed upon her because she was his sister, and she needed him, if only a little bit, as she was older and didn't do silly things as much as she used to, but it was just hard not to really go through the same old motions of being - well the older brother.
He shrugged lightly when she mentioned he was overworked. "Of course I am, but I mean this is the kind of job that needs constant care, and under staffed, so - everyone is overworked." though most didn't go to work for the simple fact of pretending to go to work on their days off. That and Ashton had been working on becoming a healer for so long, the idea of letting that go would be crazy, and all those nights he spent reading about magic to heal was pretty much worthless. Ashton was curious how her husband was doing, they were for all intent and purposes family, which meant that to a degree Ashton had to care, he knew he would never be best friends, but there was a part of him that would have to - agree to play nicely for the sake of his sister. "You know you're allowed to actually tell me in lengthy sentences how you're actually doing and less, simple answers, I'm not going to bust out into a tangent." because that would be silly. "But I'm glad you're fine, and please don't get bored, that gives less than desirable results."
Studly - that seemed hilarious, both because he didn't like to think of himself in any degree of attractive and he wasn't the kind to flirt with anyone. It wasn't hard to figure out who she was talking about, he sighed heavily, trying to point out his annoyance. "She's my best friend Sylvia, which means she's allowed to come and lounge about in my flat as often as she likes. Until - a time where she finds that husband she's looking for." besides it made him feel better knowing where she was at, if she was in his bed, she wasn't getting herself into trouble.

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME This was quickly becoming awkward. Nothing outright hostile, but honestly Sylvia wasn't sure which was worse. At least fighting with her brother made sense. Everyone fights with their siblings, but it isn't ever supposed to be an uncomfortable relationship. Couldn't Ashton just get angry for once? All of a sudden, like a switch turning her from peaceful to confrontational, Sylvia wanted nothing more than to see her big brother let loose. She knew it was a horrible thing to want, but it didn't keep her from feeling that way. Her eyes flared up a bit as he continued to talk about the girl she'd (now regrettably) brought up.
"I'm your best friend, Ash," she said, trying hard to keep the whine out of her voice. She dropped her eyes, and the realization hit her hard - she was jealous. Funny, how she was always trying to stir up trouble and evade the watchful eye of her brother and now, when he had other people to watch over, she wanted to be right back under his protection. It didn't make any sense, but Sylvia wasn't one to keep her feelings bottled up. "She doesn't deserve you." An unfair assumption on her part - the two girls hadn't been close since childhood. At this moment though Sylvia didn't care.

Why couldn't they just - get along, he wasn't sure if it was because they were both female that they were just fighting because Ashton was the only common denominator. It would certainly make his life a lot easier. His best friend and his sister needed to get along, they just - didn't. He didn't like to be angry, he didn't have time for it, Ashton had to be level headed and collected because of his job, it was just the matter of his sister knew how to poke his buttons, the ones that made him feel like a child again. It just would make his life easier if they weren't mentioned or seen within each other's company, and Ashton could keep them separated.
"You're my sister, and my best friend, but she's my best friend. There are a lot of differences between you both, and comparing and even making one of you more important than the other isn't going to happen." because Ashton loved them both, Sylvia because she was his baby sister, and Marlene because she had been there for so long, she filled empty pieces for him. Ashton returned his arm back around his sisters shoulder. "I look out for her, because she needs someone to. Just like you do. And it's not easy turning your back on someone you love. So don't expect me to." his relationship with Marlene was complicated, especially so, he'd be in love with her for the entirety of his life, and she'd - be Marlene doing what Marlene's do and that was okay with him.

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME For a split second she thought she saw a flicker of anger in her brother's eyes - but perhaps it was just her own, reflected there. No, Ashton wouldn't lash out. Not like Sylvia. Even if he had felt angry he knew exactly how to handle it. Sylvia had never been any good at that - she was about as adept as a toddler at handling her emotions. Well, that was probably an exaggeration - she was twenty two years old, after all - but a lot of times it felt that way. The sparks in her eyes slowly faded away, and her indignation dissolved into mild embarrassment. Why did Ashton always know best? That was the most mystery sort of magic there was.
She sighed heavily as he put his arm around her, but leaned into him nevertheless. Images of Marlene doing the exact same thing flashed in her head, but she quickly pushed them away. "You're right. Of course you're right." Her voice was soft, resigning gracefully to defeat. "That's why we love you so much."

Ashton knew that he couldn't win things. That there was always going to be someone out there that was going to remind him why opinions existed and that not everyone could share the same one as much as it would make his life easier. He dealt with people all the time, day in and out, unique personalities ones that didn't like him and some that did. His sister and him were born from the same family but they were different and unique, which was okay. He already knew Sylvia and Marlene didn't get along so it wasn't as if it was new news, it was just - part of it. That his sister and his best friend didn't get along, which he suppose had a lot to deal with Sylvia wanting to protect Ashton as much as he liked to protect her. It was what family was for.
"So - how is working at the Ministry? No problems?" he asked her, he needed to make sure that everything was - okay, truly, he knew that Muggleborns were targets, which meant that his sister was too, and her husband. "No problems?"

SO LET'S FADE AWAY TOGETHER ONE DREAM AT A TIME Her brother changed tactics quite quickly. It was one of his many good traits - rerouting a potentially nasty conflict. He didn't like arguing, whereas Sylvia thrived on it. But arguing only works when both sides are into it, otherwise it drops dead. Ashton was a professional argument killer.
She latched onto his question without lingering on their previous discussion. Better to cover more ground, especially since she had a fairly limited time with him. It was a pretty hot topic after all, the Ministry, and not just between them. Sylvia was happy to give her brother the inside scoop. Her voice took on an overly somber, almost hushed tone, quite like one adopted when gossiping behind someone's back.
"Well," she said with an irritated sigh, "So far so good. I'm keeping out of trouble at least." And she was. Even with the pricks climbing the ranks within the Ministry, Sylvia was minding her manners and holding her tongue. "It's tough though. You should see some of the people in charge over there." She shook her head incredulously. "And of course, my line of work's not exactly trending right now." Any job involving Muggles was not the most secure under the current conditions in more ways than one, but there was no hint of fear in the girl's voice; she seemed merely annoyed.

Ashton preferred not to fight, he liked to focus on people's well being and then mediocre chatting, which was probably why he was a healer, because he had a concern over everyone that he came into contact with - or well almost everyone. So long as Sylvia and Marlene didn't actually get into a real fight, things would be okay so long as they were separated. It wasn't as if they were ever in the same place at the same time, except for right now, but Ashton was there.
He knew that things were pretty difficult around the Ministry with all of the awkward separation going on between blood lines and elite individuals, there was some happening at St. Mungos, but there was little work to be done, and getting rid of working individuals wasn't good for business, they were mostly those that came in that resisted and asked someone of 'noble birth' or would just spend the entire time complaining or making snide comments that you would just have to smile and nod to. He nodded his head when she told him about keeping herself out of trouble, keeping her head down was key. "I don't think I want to, I can only imagine." really it was better left for his imagination anyways. "I can't see it being very popular, don't be afraid to take a day or two off if you need to, they probably won't notice, just don't say anything to any of them, that just gives them a reason to be a bully." he of course knew he wasn't saying anything new that she hadn't heard before, but he felt better saying it. "But other than the insufferable lot, you do like it there?" other than Ashton hiding her under his bed to be safe forever, or her bed as he couldn't hide her from her husband.
